The December Farm Update

Dec 10, 2017

We are very excited to announce that we now have a reliable supply of hot water at the farm! Last year we were given a £9,500 grant from the Big Lottery Fund for a Biomass boiler which has just this week been completed. The boiler is now up and running - 1 wheelbarrow of logs from the woods on the farm will heat our 1000 litre tank with hot water for around three days! This will provide precious hot water for cleaning in the dairy and butchery.

We are also excited to say that on the 1 December Sally the sow gave birth to six piglets, a wee bit earlier than expected so a lovely surprise! Six is a pretty small litter but at least there will be no competition for teats as Sally has 16 and a smaller litter also means they will grow fast with plenty of milk.

At this time of year it is natural for the goats milk yield to decrease - this is due to fewer daylight hours, poorer winter grazing quality and the time since the last kidding. We have seen quite a significant drop in yield recently and are currently only getting around five litres a day. We are hoping to make it to the end of December but if the yield drops below five litres we will stop milking before then. This will also allow our lovely nannies to have a break for a few months before the next kidding. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our milk and halloumi members for your support and hope you’ve enjoyed the goat dairy products as much as we have!

Lastly we would like to welcome you all to come join us at the farm on Sunday 17 December from 11-3pm for a day of festive wreath making led by the wonderful Linda Lemieux of Wild Woods and Willow. There will also be music, storytelling, mulled cider, mince pies and a rustic lunch served at 12.30.

Please let us know if you plan to come so we have an idea of numbers by sending us an email to membership(at)chagfarm.org or confirm via the Facebook event.

So all that is left to say is that we wish you all a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you all for your support throughout 2017.

With love from us all at Chagfarm.
